Over 10 years ago I felt that I was completely fed up wit offices, never ending tasks and immense workload for which I hardly earned my living. A solution came from nowhere. A friend of mine asked me to write reviews for his IT website. This was my first freelance experience. Over time I got more and more tasks which would not fit in a normal working day of 8 hours. Analyzing my productivity and efficiency I understood that I needed a tool to plan tasks and time. This was my first choice of task management system.
First I chose the most convenient type of task management system for my sort of work. I understood that all freelance activity depends on the latest technologies and is about technologies, that is why I chose web-based solution. I needed constant access to my tasks whenever and wherever I was.
The next factor was simplicity of interface and usage of the task management software. Keep in mind that the task manager should assist you in your freelance work, saving your time and efforts, but not frustrating you with unknown functions and options. I did not want to waste time to learn how it worked.
Other business application integration was essential for me. By the time I chose my first task management system I had already over 500 business contacts in my google account. This meant a nightmare for me to transfer every contact into the system. That is why I opted for a solution which was able to integrate with my google account and transfer all of my business contacts into the system. It took about a minute and I was done. From that time I received notifications from my business contacts right into my task management account and was able to answer to messages and to modify orders and tasks simultaneously.
Being able to communicate with my clients through task management system interface without getting them installed and using the same software I was able to avoid common mistakes and losses of information. I was able to edit any task according new remarks and changes.
Another factor I considered was availability of mobile app. Of course 10 years ago we did not have smartphones. But by the time I got my first iPhone I understood the necessity of an application for mobile platform. Then I got an iPad for convenient work out from the home. Having an application for your task management system provides you access to your account without using browsers. This is very convenient as you will be notified of getting update of your order, closing deadline or other alerts from the system in a matter of moments.
If your task management system provides you access only to mobile version of cloud service through web browser, then consider another application. You will not be able to get instant alerts and notifications from your account through browser. Of course, you can use a system of notifications via email, then it will require additional actions and clicks from you. Believe it or not, but you work on freelance to get rid of office distractions. So my recommendation will be not to take typical office distractions from your office life into your freelance work.
Task management system has structured my freelance activity and now I work better saving time and getting financially better results!
